- Description
- Bridge at Kakesbeck Castle in the Bechtrup hamlet in Lüdinghausen , North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany Kakesbeck Castle is one of the oldest moated castles in the Münsterland region and is located near Lüdinghausen. Its origins date back to the 12th century. It was first mentioned in documents around 1170 as the seat of a knightly family. In the Middle Ages, Kakesbeck was a typical Münsterland moated castle with moats, defensive walls, and residential buildings. It served both as a noble residence and to secure property and power. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and underwent structural changes. While other castles in the region were rebuilt during the Baroque period, Kakesbeck remained relatively unchanged. Today, parts of the complex have been restored, while others are still being secured. Archaeological investigations have provided valuable insights into medieval construction and everyday life. Kakesbeck Castle is considered an important cultural and historical monument in the Münsterland region.
